What the numbers mean

Each number comes from Google Trends for the last 12 months. It shows how big a share of all searching in a metro was about that keyword, scaled so the metro where it's highest is 100. A small metro can score high because the topic is a big part of what people there search for. It isn't a count of searches.

Every layer is scaled to its own busiest metro, so the map shows where each trade is relatively strongest, not which trade gets more searches overall.

The monthly search counts on the layers and the season bars are Google Ads estimates for the whole US (pulled through OpenSEO). They are national, not per metro.

Yelp, Angi, Nextdoor and similar sites don't publish their search data, so they aren't on this map. We only show what we can measure.

Data: Google Trends, pulled . Metro areas are Nielsen media markets.
